INTENT

At Sutton Road, Pupils will make progress by reflecting on the impact of religions and worldviews on contemporary life locally, nationally and globally to increasing levels of depth. This will enable them to live as responsible members of their community.

RE will make a significant contribution to our children’s understanding of British Values, developing tolerance and respect for people who hold varied beliefs and world views, both of a religious and secular nature.

The teaching should equip children with the knowledge and understanding, to enable them to reflect and relate their learning in RE to their own experiences.

Our pupils will develop critical thinking and oracy skills and the confidence to discuss their own beliefs and values, and those of others, with increasing creativity and clarity.

Pupils will use these skills to interpret accounts of their own personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences whilst respecting the rights of others to have different views and ways of life.

Our school is committed to providing Religious Education (RE) and Collective Worship that respects the diverse religious and philosophical convictions of all families. 

IMPLEMENTATION

As a school, we are following The Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education in Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire 2026-2031. We have recently launched this and are working on implementing it across school.

Within our EYFS curriculum, the children develop their understanding of religions, families and communities through stories, art, role-play and talking points to develop their knowledge of the world. From Year 1 to Year 6, pupils are taught RE weekly. Through these lessons, many cross-curricular links and opportunities are discussed and explored.

As you walk down our main corridor in school, you will notice a large display which celebrates our school’s religious and cultural diversity, creating a strong sense of belonging. We are also developing our parental engagement by hosting whole school events based around a range of religious holidays.

We are working to develop our enrichment opportunities to provide ‘hands on’ experiences for our pupils’ and support our classroom-based teaching. The use of RE floor books is embedded in each class. This celebrates pupil voice and encourages debate and sharing opinions in a respectful manner.

CPD for staff is ongoing, e.g. School curriculum INSET, annual RE Leaders courses, family of school’s networks, Nottinghamshire SACRE events. Our pupil and staff voice surveys also help us to evaluate and develop the teaching and learning of RE to ensure it is relevant, current and creative.

Parents have the legal right to withdraw their child from all, or part, of RE and/or Collective Worship if they feel it conflicts with their own beliefs. If you wish to exercise this right, please inform the school.

IMPACT

Our children feel a sense of belonging and are beginning to raise questions about their own worldviews and beliefs. Our children are developing their oracy to be able to express their own opinions and establish a deeper understanding and engagement for everyone.
