INTENT

At Sutton Road Primary School and Nursery, we believe that Computing is an essential part of modern life and equips children with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to participate safely, responsibly and confidently in an increasingly digital world.

Our Computing curriculum provides a progressive learning journey from Year 1 to Year 6, developing pupils' skills in the three key strands of Computing: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. Through engaging and meaningful learning experiences, children learn to code, solve problems, create digital content and use technology purposefully.

Online safety is at the heart of our curriculum. We aim to ensure that all pupils develop the knowledge and understanding required to make safe and informed decisions online. Children learn about online relationships, privacy, digital footprints, cyberbullying and the importance of seeking help when needed.

We strive to develop digitally competent learners who can create, communicate, collaborate and problem-solve using technology. By the time they leave Sutton Road Primary School and Nursery, pupils are equipped with the digital skills, creativity and resilience needed for the next stage of their education and life in an ever-changing technological world.

Our Aims

Through our Computing curriculum, we aim for all pupils to:

  • Become confident, responsible and safe users of technology.
  • Develop computational thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Understand and apply the fundamental principles of computer science.
  • Create, organise, store and present digital content effectively.
  • Use technology creatively to express ideas and support learning.
  • Understand how to stay safe and behave responsibly online.
  • Develop the digital skills needed for future learning, employment and everyday life.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Sutton Road Primary School and Nursery, Computing is taught through the Purple Mash scheme of work, which provides a clear and progressive curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6. Pupils develop knowledge and skills across the three strands of Computing: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy.

Children take part in regular Computing lessons where they learn to code, create digital content, handle data and use technology purposefully. Key knowledge and skills are revisited throughout the curriculum, enabling pupils to build on prior learning and develop increasing confidence and independence.

Online safety is a key part of our curriculum and is taught regularly across all year groups. Children learn how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, helping them to recognise risks and know where to seek support.

Teachers use Purple Mash resources and assessment opportunities to support learning and monitor progress. Computing skills are also applied across the wider curriculum where appropriate, allowing pupils to use technology to enhance their learning in other subjects.

IMPACT

At Sutton Road Primary School and Nursery, pupils leave as confident, responsible and capable users of technology. Through a progressive Computing curriculum, they develop a secure understanding of Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy, enabling them to use technology effectively and purposefully.

Pupils can create, communicate, collaborate and solve problems using a range of digital tools. They apply their computing knowledge across the curriculum and understand the role technology plays in everyday life.

Children develop a strong awareness of online safety and know how to stay safe, make informed choices and seek support when needed. By the end of Year 6, pupils are equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for the next stage of their education and life in an increasingly digital world.
